Intriguing historical fiction
Although this book is the second book in a series written by S.W Perry, it can be read as a stand-alone. I won this book and never read the first book but I still found it easy to understand as the characters were described in the beginning and enough background information was given.
The themes of this novel (espionage, murder, conspiracy, politics and religion) are themes that I am usually interested in. However, I found that this novel moved painstakingly slow. Sentences felt long and too much detail was given and that didn’t leave much to the imagination.
Despite that, the characters were developed incredibly well. I found it easy to empathise with the main character, Nicholas Shelby, after he failed to save his wife and child. Bianca’s courage is especially admirable.
