This is the second book in the Jackdaw Mysteries and although I haven't read the first book in this series by S.W. Perry, 'The Angel's Mark'. I think I would have had a much clearer and enjoyable read if I had. However, there's still much to enjoy
This is an historical novel set in Elizabethan England and centres around Nicholas Shelby who after trying to help a friend gets caught up in a deadly conspiracy. There's a lot of detail in the beginning, so the pace suffers for it; I really wasn't sure I'd like it... however things do pick up and it turns pacey and suspenseful; I began to enjoy it much more.
I like the character of Bianca Merton, whose tavern Nicholas is residing in, after a previous crisis of faith and grief upon losing his wife and child.
I think I would have enjoyed it more if I'd read the first book, but there's lots of reasons to read this if you like historical thrillers.
