The Swords of Silence seems an appropriate title for a book detailing the lives of Christians living in Japan at the time of the Shoguns: as a group of people who had to hide their faith in order to survive, or face the wrathe of the samurai.
There are elements of the extract of this book that I liked, though I'm unsure if they outweigh the issues. While I fully appreciate that this is about the lives of Christians living in peril, there are times when it feels less like the characters are discussing their faith and more like they are preaching.
There is clearly a huge amount of research gone into this books, but there is almost too much content that it feels at times like reading a reference book rather than a novel.
