The cover places this story firmly in Japan and martial arts. It is set in one of the most well-known eras of Japan, the seventeenth century, under strong unified samurai rule. It focuses on the illegal practice of Christianity, in particular the Europeans who brought their faith to Japan. I didn't find out from the blurb or the extract why the novel is billed as fantasy.
