The plot follows the Christian Missionarys hiding out in Japan in the 1600s. Protagonist Father Joachim has spent 25 years in Japan, using his time wisely training to be a fighting master.

The opening chapter brings us a grim line of Christians, including the highest ranking Christian in Japan. Bracing their selves against the steeled rain as they are forced marched to their execution. Tied to stakes and left to die a slow death as fires placed 3FT away burn off their flesh, gruesome. The plot shows us other more minor Christian and local populace oppression, the gritty olden days of Japan bringing a tarnished umber taste to the tongue.

The author SCurry does a good job of describing the political situation in Shogun Japan, at times the narrative closes you into a smoked wooden cage, so good is the writing. There are many characters, maybe too many for a beginning, but the story entwines you within its seeded promise. Father Joachim is a good character, we don’t learn his personality in depth, but strength of action really shines in his Karate Priest way. As I will be touring Nagasaki this year, I think this will serve as an excellent primer, this read is right down my alley. This is a masculine orientated book, but some of the negative reviews here have disgregarded the quality of research and writing.
