I'm not sure about this book, whilst it's setting is one that I have an historical interest in (17th Century Japan) it does make for uncomfortable reading. It has however, led me to want to investigate the persecutions set out in the novel as fact as this is something I have not come across before. Admittedly my primary interest in the period is in the Flower and Willow World. something that although the Shogunate would avail themselves of I am sure Christian Ministry would rather ignore.

The writing is solid and does draw you in but it it is hard to become too invested in the First Impression as the early chapters are more character introductions than anything else. Although, they do give you a small glimpse in to the societal structure of the period.
