W are in a not too distant Japan. The dictatorship is harsh and ruthless - the Shogun is always right and does not allow for any different opinion. Only the most violent nobles and generals will be considered by the dictator. And the more the hate Christians and the more they take initiatives to persecute and kill them all, the more they will be regarded in favour from the dictator.

It is a fascinating age, of which I certainly knew little about. It is interesting to see how history repeats and mirrors itself across times and geographies.

The book started well, with a nice setting delineation and a nice atmosphere being built by the narrative. The initial scenes are quite entertaining with a lot of visual action and violence.

However, it quickly goes into Zen mode. Everything moves slowly, characters are a bit thin and decisions are dragged over the course of paragraphs.

I eventually lost interest and about a quarter of the book in, I gave up. It was promising and a nice read for the first few chapters. But it quickly went out of steam and I lost interest. A pity really.
