In the 1600’s Europe was sending missionaries to convert the world to Catholicism. This book details the story of Father Joaquim Martinez who left Portugal to go to live and preach in Japan. In return he’s been taught the Japanese “Way of the Sword” training for Samurai. The Shogun wants all foreigners and Christians expelled from Japan or exterminated.
The plot is good keeping you interested and wanting to know what happens next but unfortunately the prose is very repetitive when the Japanese officials talk to foreigners, using the same derogatory phrases time after time. This detracts from the characterisation of the heroes and villains leaving them a bit one dimensional.
However this book would be entertaining for holiday reading.
