Set in Japan in the 1600s we follow the devout Christian Father Joaquim as he tries to live by his faith and protect his village. Joaquim left Portugal after killing a man and has since dedicated his life to Christianity.

In Japan at this time in the book, Christianity is outlawed and the Shogun fears that Christians are there to spy on him, his prejudice forces him to send out his soldiers to find Christians and to torture and put them to death. This part of the book is particularly brutal! Faced with rising taxes and the Shoguns fear, it’s a dangerous time to be a Christian in Japan. Father Martinez and his villages try to save all of the Christians in their village while facing the might of the Shogunate.

If your shy about gore, this isn’t for you. Detail is what makes this story so gritty. This further reinforces the brutality at that time in history, Christians persecuted for believing in a different faith.

An action packed book with a brilliant historical nod to the past. Full of gore and violence paired with testing religions vs prejudice.

It’s a great book. I love the ARC, it’s not to some people’s taste to receive one but it was perfect for me.

Thank you Readers First for sending me this book to review.
