Do not read this book if you are squeamish! There is a lot of mutilation which is graphically described and although this may be a true reflection of the atrocities that happened in this period of history, it makes for an uncomfortable read.

The story itself is a page turner as I wanted to find out what fate lay ahead for the main characters but I was left feeling slightly disappointed at the end. Perhaps this is because the book is part of a trilogy; either way I have no real desire to read any future chapters.

Along with the violence (if this book were a film it would easily exceed Rambo on body count!) there is a lot of religion in the novel. I struggled to decide if this was because the question of faith was critical to the story or whether the author's own views were being expressed, most likely a combination of both.

This is not a historical novel and by the end I was left feeling a little unsure of how I would classify the book. It did, however, leave me with interest in perhaps researching this area of history in further detail.
