I felt that you really need to have read the first book to understand this one as lots of characters and places involved in the plot. I did think that the maps would be useful in helping you work out where events were taking place and the lists of the principal characters was also useful. I do not think this is the book for me but I know a couple of friends who would love the complexity. history and intrigue.
