I was hooked on The Last Hours, Walters' first novel for ten years, and a complete change of genre for her. Now here comes the concluding book, The Turn of Midnight, which promises to be just as engrossing.

Walters has created a fabulous main character in the courageous and loved Lady Anne. She is the mistress and leader of a group holed up in the quarantined village of Develish. The temptation for anyone would be to stay put and try and weather the Black Death storm of 1349. However, dangerously low food stores mean the group will soon be forced out into the world - die if you stay, who knows if you don't, in a Survivors-type scenario for medieval times.

But Lady Anne is not alone in making the potentially fatal decision to stay or risk everything and leave the village, because all heroines have a buddy, and Lady Anne's is Thaddeus Thurkell. An agricultural labourer, Thurkell is also an educated man - and together he and Lady Anne plan to beat the forces of evil - both human and of sickness - and guide the villagers safely beyond the cold fingers of plague death or starvation, through to happier times.

From the cover, with its beautiful artwork reminiscent of a medieval book of hours, to the foreboding title, The Turn of Midnight will no doubt prove to be as absorbing as the first. Fans will also be hoping that there are more to come in what would be a hugely popular series.
