I hate coming to a series midway through so wouldn't be able to read this objectively without feeling like I'd missed the character development and scene setting of the previous book....this sort of thing doesn't really work as a standalone, and the blurb doesn't interest me enough to hunt that out to catch up. Not the sort of story I'd read by choice.
