The Turn of Midnight is the follow up to The Last Hours . Set during the Black Death of 1348 . Lady Anne took the bold decision of isolating herself and 200 serfs inside the manor house of Develish in Dorset . She was convinced by teachings she had learned from the Nuns that quarantine was the only hope . The first book ended with her Steward , Thaddeus Thirkell taking a group of young men in search of supplies and news of the pestilence .
Now in book 2 Thaddeus and the boys have returned with 200 sheep and information that almost everyone in the area have perished . For the few survivors left life has become a constant struggle . The serf's lives have been turned upside down . Without their lords and masters there to give them daily orders the peasants do not know how to think for themselves and are slowly starving to death . Lady Anne , with the help of Thaddeus sets out to help as many as she can , but will the Church succeed in stopping them ?
Another fantastic historical novel with a wealth of factual detail from the period . Very good , but not quite as good as The Last Hours .
