Having read and enjoyed Minette Walters modern day thrillers before I was pleased to be able to review the second and concluding book about the town of Develish
and its people set in 1349. I read up to page 100 and just couldn't carry on with it. This was for a number of reasons. The only character I found interesting was Thaddeus Thurkell, the rest I thought were too saintly or over the top villains. I also had keep referring back to the list of people, places and events throughout the read which was annoying. The pace of the story was too slow and a bit wordy. I hadn't read the first book but hoped that this could be a stand alone volume which it wasn't.

For me the best writer of this period is Ken Follett.
