The Turn of Midnight is the sequel to The Last Hours which was about the arrival of The Black Death in the small feudal community of Develish in Dorset. The story immediately follows on - Thaddeus and five youths have left the village to seek supplies and find out how the surrounding places have fared during the plague whilst Lady Anne has remained to care for the villagers and her spoilt and wayward stepdaughter Eleanor.
This book is well written however I did not enjoy it as much as The last Hours. It lacked the ever present sense of fear of the plague and also lacked the conflict between Anne and Eleanor. There are a lot of characters in the story and although there is a list at the front to remind the reader of those from Develish, there are an equal number mentioned from Blandeford and Bourne.
In conclusion, the story does not really justify the length of this novel and it drags at times. I did like the periodic insertion of extracts from Lady Anne's private diaries which help to move things along a bit.
No idea what the title relates to though.
