At first I thought it had started with an introduction of the author as it mentions being a journalist but you quickly realize the author is drawing on an environment he knows and it is actually the main character "talking".
The change in environment and pace from one chapter to the next was handled well and the dynamic between the family members was explained in a short space but very naturally.
The writing style is very journalistic in that it gives all the usefull information with very little "faff" so the scene and characters are described and set up quickly but effectively.
