Slightly irritating lead

I love the premise of this book, but I'm finding the lead character Gil quite irritating so far. Whether this is deliberate or not I'm not sure, but if it's not I'm not sure how much I'd enjoy the whole book. Maybe Peston is basing Gil on himself?
