Brilliant
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Politics, whether you love following the ins and outs or you cannot stand the subject, can be a heavy topic but in this novel Robert Preston succeeded in making the subject engaging through use of an excellent plot and interesting and well-constructed characters.
The period when the novel is set, 1997 at the end of the Conservative reign and the beginning of New Labour, was a time I was very interested in politics and this book captures the period well. I did find myself at times trying to work out which fictional characters drew from which real-life politicians of the time though!
I loved the portrayal of the main character, the journalist Gil Peck, and would love to know who inspired the character and how much was semi-autobiographical or someone he either knew or wanted to be like.
The book is fast paced, interesting and included some nice pieces of humour – a really enjoyable read.
