It's 1997 and Gil Peck is a political journalist and about to be in the thick of it as a General Election is on the horizon.
Hot New Labour candidate, Johnny Todd, is predicted to win by a landslide.
However Gil's political reporting is about to be disrupted when his sister, Clare, is killed in a road accident. She worked at the Treasury and was advising the government about a new pension's tax policy. However something doesn't quite add up about her death and Gil starts digging.
When he learns that the PM ditched her "perfect" tax plan he comes to realise that someone is pulling the government's strings but who and why? MOre importantly could they be responsible for his sister's murder?
This story is fast paced and fascinating. It gives a real feel for the behind the scenes machinations at Westminster. Gil is a flawed but really likeable character and, as a reader, I certainly found myself rooting for him. A great fiction debut from Robert Peston, I'd definitely read more!
