Well, I must admit that political thrillers aren’t exactly my thing , but decided to give this one a go.
The main character is a political journalist called Gil who works for a respected newspaper. He has OCD , an unfortunate drink and drug habit and seems to spend most of his time drinking with fellow journalists and politicians at the Groucho club , ready to be fed information necessary to uncover the latest political scandal. He seems to be estranged from his family, especially his elder sister Clare who is a high ranking civil servant in the Treasury .Oh yes, he is also fashion conscious and always anxious to be seen wearing the designer items from his wardrobe.
It is 1997 and a general election is imminent . The Conservative government is hanging on by thread and it is expected that the election result will pave the way for a newly rejuvenated Labour Party in the hands of it’s charismatic leader. The action starts when Clare is killed in a suspicious road accident and Gil is determined to find out exactly what happened .
I must admit that I found the first half of the book quite slow, and the substantial number of characters with the explanations of political procedure confusing and tedious. The second half of the book was better as the action picked up. All in all an ok read.
