This book’s synopsis immediately intrigued me and I know from reading the first impression it is like nothing I have ever read before. It has such clever use of language and metaphors and I love how the concept of written and spoken words both serving different functions is mentioned quite early on, setting the scene for humans being an enemy within the story.

Word is a character within the book, who as I was reading felt like a real person (which is really clever as he can’t be a person as we know that words are scared of humans)! He meets two older words, Rhyme and Reason and they have sculptures in their gardens depicting famous word pairs which I really liked. They have sent Word on a path of discovery to find his own word family – “Because without family and without meaning, you are nothing.”

This idea of words being the central focus of a story is so unique and I am intrigued to see the journey Word goes on. The descriptions are extremely clever and I like the idea of Word needing to find his word family, his meaning and his place in the world.
