„We can't just demonize people. We need them, they read and write us. They let us exist. ” A word cannot believe or understand these statements of the father - until it suddenly loses its meaning due to a traumatic experience. The word alone has to go on an adventurous journey through the world of language. In the search for yourself there are a few challenges to overcome.

“The Word Trove” is the unusual debut novel by Elias Vorpahl.

My opinion:
In addition to a prologue and an epilogue the book consists of eleven short chapters. The story is told from the perspective of the word.

Not only the content of the novel depicts the different facets of language but also its style: Great word games, language images, metaphors and other rhetorical figures were able to inspire me. That requires careful reading. But that's exactly why I liked the writing style very much.

I find the basic idea of the novel, words coming to life, extremely creative and unusual. The plot, which has several twists and turns, is coherent and conclusive down to the last page. Touching scenes alternate with exciting passages. The story never becomes lengthy but remains varied.

In addition to the linguistic aspects that met my personal interest philosophical thoughts are also expressed. The book is thought-provoking and provides important food for thought. Another plus for me.

I liked the word from the very beginning so that I shared the excitement for the main protagonist and enjoyed the story. However, due to the abstract nature of the characters, I sometimes had a bit of trouble imagining the characters in the novel. Even after the last chapter several questions remained unanswered for me. For example: Why do some words have an animal shape and what shape do the rest of the words have? Does every word and every little word only exist once or several times? I would have liked more details on these questions. At this point, the implementation weakens a little. A few more pages would not have harmed the novel.

However, the tasteful and loving illustrations that enrich the novel in terms of both content and appearance are helpful for understanding. They are special and - like the cover - they go very well with the story. The title is also aptly chosen.

My conclusion:
"The Word Trove" by Elias Vorpahl is a unique and very creative novel that is full of love. It's a story worth reading - not just for language lovers and fans of the fantasy genre.
