Reading the 'first look' I get the impression Thorn is part fantasy, past fairytale. Thorn starts with The King of Menaiya and his entourage paying a visit to Adania the home of Princess Alyrra, her mother, The Queen Dowager, and her brother. There are rumours that the King of Menaiya is looking for a bride for his son and is considering the suitability of Princess Alyrra. The Princess is not looked upon favourably by her family and many in their entourage but is well regarded by the servants who seem to be fond of her and try to protect her as much as they can from her brother's cruelty. On first acquaintance the Princess feels the King of Menaiya does not appear to be a kind man but her future will be decided in meetings between the King and his people and the Queen Dowager, her son and the Council of Adania. The King walks with Princess Alyrra in the garden and states that she will not have to tolerate her brother if she goes to Menaiya however the Princess is unsure she will be treated better there. The Princess rides out into the forest and talks to the spirit of the wind which brings her some comfort but she is troubled that the women involved with the Menaiyan Royal family do not have long lives however it is decided that a marriage will take place between to King of Menaiya's son and Princess Alyrra and she is asked for her consent which she feels obliged to give. Will this prove to be the best for the Princess or not? I can't wait to read the rest of this book by Intisar Khanani as I've a feeling Princess Adania is going to have plenty of adventures with lots of intrigue along the way. I've got my fingers crossed that this is one fairytale where they'll all live happily ever after.
