I wasn't blown away by the begging of this book. You have your trope princess that doesn't act like one and likes to spend time with the kitchen staff and riding and she is to be married to a prince she never met.

Her mother and abusive bother hate her. It is hinted that she did something very bad and I'm guessing she is probably responsible for the death of her own father.

The king of the kingdom she is to be married to drops hints about the fact that Alyrra is known for being honest and I  suppose it's some kind of foreshadowing or interesting fact about her personality but, to be honest, it didn't do anything for me.

Also from the very early, we are also introduced to the king's captain with, if I had to guess based on the way he is introduced, he will probably be the love interest and we'll probably have some kind of love triangle between Alyrra, Sarkor the captain and Kestrin the price.

What did picked my attention, however, is the fact that Alyrra has some magical ability and it looks like it has to do with the wind or with elements in general. The way that this was introduced was well done and it made me a little more interested in reading the rest of the story than I was initially.
