Thorn is a modern take on the Grimm Brothers tale, The Goose Girl. The protagonist Alyrra is instantly likeable, and the way her situation is expressed as the novel unfolds is both intriguing and riveting. Indeed, this is the first instance that I have seen a fictional character (no spoilers) actually prefer to leave her privileged background and titles, rather than seek to keep them or gain some more.

The writing style, though seemingly simplistic, is actually incredibly detailed, allowing for more information to pop up on a second or third read (which I highly recommend!). This allows the story to move along pretty quickly, while also allowing romance plots and other sub plots to become more slow burning.

I strongly recommend this book to all fans of young adult fantasy, and I am looking forward to seeing what the author writes next.
