Thorn by Intisar Khanani
‘One princess. Two fates. An impossible choice.’
Princess Alyrra has been betrothed to Prince Kestrin - a stranger from another kingdom. On her way to her new life in a new kingdom, a terrifying encounter with a sorceress changes everything. A tale of betrayal, injustice and love begins to unravel.
I really like the general feel of this book and it was overall an enjoyable read. The premise of the story really grabbed my attention and it started well. However as the book went on I felt it plateaued and plodded along.
I felt the relationship between Thorn and her new friends believable, particularly the close bond she has with Falada. I did not however believe in the relationship she has with Kestrin. I did not buy into this at all.
I felt some elements of the storytelling were confused, and it did not always make sense. I also felt some threads of the plot were just padding to lengthen the book. The ending was underwhelming.
This very much felt like a steady opening book to a series. There may be more excitement to come in any following instalment, and hopefully some of the loose ends from this book concluded. But would I read any sequel? I am not sure...
