Reading the first chapters, there was a sense of arriving in the middle of something. What is the story behind the family's treatment of this young woman? Why does "honest" sound like a pejorative term? What does the talking wind suggest? What happened to all those wives? I want to know more....
The heroine is an intriguing character, who obviously has an interesting back story. She inhabits a world which has a hint of the magical. Family relationships are cold and edgy with history. I liked the first person narration - the fact that the story is told from Alyrra's perspective puts the reader on her side from the beginning. And she does come across as a sympathetic character.
A confident and well realised introduction which gives a strong sense of the characters and promises a lot in store.
