Thorn is a retelling of the Grimm fairytale The Goose Girl. The main character is Alyrra, a princess of the kingdom Adania, who is considered to be an embarrassment by her mother and brother and is also subject to bullying and violence at the hands of her brother. When the king from a neighbouring kingdom of Menaiya arrives to request Alyrra's betrothal to his son, Kestrin, Alyrra's mother and brother are only too happy to agree - they are glad to be rid of her.
Events on Alyrra's journey to Menaiya lead her life down another path, and she is left with the difficult choice of leading a life away from the royal court doing something where she feels free and happy or righting wrongs and returning to the royal court.
I enjoyed this book, it was well written. However, I felt like it rushed towards the ending in the final chapters...having taken a while to get there. I would rather that the book had been a bit longer and continued on at the pace it had been moving at.
