Thorn is based on the fairytale retelling of the goose girl. Having never read that particular fairytale, I went into this with only the synopsis to guide me on what to expect. Because of that I can’t say how closely it sticks to the fairytale but I can tell you I loved this book.

After a recent number of fairly average reads, I was looking for something to grab my attention and keep me entertained. That’s exactly what I got with Thorn. The story is brilliantly told and builds slowly. The writing is rich and full of depth. The language is engaging and atmospheric. All of this combines to leave you immersed in this magical world.

Alongside the wonderful storytelling are the amazing characters. Thorn herself is a different kind of heroine to the one we are used to seeing in YA. She isn’t fierce or kick-ass in the traditional sense, instead she is quiet, loyal and loving. I loved her character development so much more because of this change. It was refreshing to see a character be scared and timid but also learn how to stand up for herself and others despite her fears. I adored Falada, Violet, Sage and the boys too. They all enriched the story and added the family dynamic to Thorn’s life that she was sorely missing. Speaking of which Thorn’s family were truly horrible people and I’m glad we only had to endure them for a short amount of time. Valka on the other hand is vile. What a horrendous woman. Clearly as a villain she is well written to deduce such strong feelings but I could not stand her!

Overall this was a fantastically written story about overcoming adversity, betrayal and injustice and the power of strong relationships.

One I would highly recommend!
