This re-telling of the fairy tale, The Goose Girl, tells the story of princess Alyrra who longs for a simpler, quieter life away from her life of royalty and cruel family, including her unloving mother and abusive brother. However, when this wish is finally granted, she finds herself facing a new dilemma, with the fate of a whole kingdom at stake.
Overall, I enjoyed reading this book. It was my first time reading a book of this genre (a young adult, fairy tale re-telling) and I hadn’t read The Goose Girl before. At the beginning, I feel that (for me) the plot moved quite quickly, and I feel it could have given a bit more context at the beginning. However, I soon understood the plot better and the pace improved. I couldn’t help but love the main character Alyrra, who, despite being a princess, is very down-to-earth and understands the significance of happiness and justice over money, status or power. Yet, the feature which stood out to me the most throughout the book was the detailed and vivid descriptions. Settings and characters were always fantastically described, giving powerful imagery and immersing me as a reader.
