I really wanted to like this book, the cover was very captivating and the blurb sounded promising. However for me so far I'm not liking any of it.
I have read a few fantasy novels and I suppose for me after reading a recent spin on Beauty and the Beast, I was expecting good things from Thorn, but unlike other fantasy novels this was a slow burner.
The authors descriptive side of things in the book is really good and gives you a promisng vision of where the book is taken place. However the characters and most importantly the personality of them is hard for me to like and read about. Now I know many stories you have the likeable characters and the villains etc, but for me I can't stand any of them. The mother who yes is Queen, has absolutely no love at all for her Daughter Alyrra and so far you don't know why. Then there's the son, the brother to Alyrra who is clearly a bully and abusive to his sister which again leaves me asking why what has she done and also why is Alyrra doing nothing about it. Many part of the two chapters states how honest and feisty she is but you aren't seeing any of that at all, just a frightened submissive child.
Maybe further in the story it picks up but for me I won't continue, whether it's because I don't know the fairytale story it is inspired by "Goose Girl", or maybe it's the nastiness from it that just makes me want to shout for her to stand up for herself, but either way for me this is a no.
