Intisar Khanani has woven together a beautiful tapestry of magic, royalty and relationships that explores themes of betrayal and injustice in this stunning retelling of ‘The Goose Girl’.
Before this, I was not overly familiar with the original telling and so I was able to enjoy this with little comparisons. The writing was vivid, atmospheric and surprisingly moving; I felt a great empathy for Princess Alyrra and even welled up at one part of the story (a very rare thing for me – I cry at movies and theatre but not usually books).

The world building is beautifully done, and the characters are rich. I was particularly taken with Falada, who was both friend and voice of reason. I enjoyed his character immensely.

This was a wonderful story and one I will be recommending time and time again to those who love fantasy.
