The cover instantly puts you in a fairy story sort of frame of mind, which suits the book immeasurably. I didn't initially realise it was based on an existing fairy story, of which i wasn't familiar any way so it didn't make any difference to my enjoyment of the book.

This novel covers all the fairy story tropes, court intrigue, love stories, indifferent parents, mysterious lady with magical powers, evil companions, talking horse, body swap, princess being forced to work as a lowly servant, good times, bad times and everything in between.

It is very well paced and the novel flows well, the characters are engaging and even the minor ones you have an interest in, rather than them being just part of the scenery - Thorn's fellow servants each have a special part in her story.

There's an added bonus at the end of this book of a short story, which it implies leads into the main character of the next book by this author. i enjoyed this story too so it has me hooked awaiting that books release next year.
