Irritating main character

Although the book was well-written and character development well thought out I though the overwhelming negativity and selfishness of the main character Effie to be more than a little irritating.

Life isn't going the way she wants (although it doesn't look like she puts much effort in to improve her life), and she is understandably lacking in confidence and self-esteem but her inherent rudeness to people who are kind to her was a little hard to take.

Theo was being kind to her, and although he will clearly be her love-interest later in the novel she was unbelievably rude to him, and if she hates her 'best friend' Kate so much why does she bother meeting with her. It's two-faced.

Perhaps setting her up as being such an awful character is to make the transformation more apparent later when she gets self-confidence and self-esteem and gets her happily ever after.
