At first I liked Effie's bitterness and 'I hate life' attitude, but when she met Theo she changed into someone whose happiness came from being in a relationship, which is something she despised in others like Kate. It is such a cliché - I almost put the book down. Lonely woman falls in love with a man she just met and suddenly her life is magical. Only Theo made her happy. There is no way someone like Theo would love someone like Effie or stick around for as long as he did. Just like every other book. Then, when he ghosts her, it gets interesting. This is very relatable. I like how Effie responds and I find myself cheering her on. The moral of the story is you cannot judge books by covers, and don't give up. The Arthur and Toby story line is sweet, though other sub plots and characters were undeveloped. Arthur is the true hero in this book. He put up with Effie for so long, and gave her a job. Without ruining the book, I cannot give much detail. Of all the themes in the book, I find the seahorse cover a strange choice. The simple cover is eye catching, but I initially didn't see the seahorses. I thought it was a weird swirly pattern. If you need a light book to read, I would recommend. It has great messages. Just prepare yourself for a cliché. The constant alcohol and coffee references were excessive. I get it - she drinks A LOT. It just plays into a stereotype. But other references to degrees and economy were relatable.
