The story begins when Matilda Effie Heaton finds herself walking against a large group of school children and it makes her think of herself at that age. That was a time when she looked forward to the future because at that age , she thought she could do anything, as school leavers do. Effie always wanted to be a writer. But after getting only average results at college and university , she started on a life time of disappointments. Non of her written novels were ever accepted by publishers and she suffered many rejections of her work. Effie was now in her late twenties and she had only ever managed to get a job in a bookshop.
Her personal life could not have been much worse either because she was still single and still living with her parents. During the story , somebody comes along who could change everything for Effie , but this person has his own problems too.
