I loved this book and read it in two days! Matilda Effie Heaton, or Effie as she likes to be known is a difficult character to warm to at the beginning of the story. She feels a failure as she is still living at home, has not become a best selling writer, drinks too much, has no friends and no money. Effie also is deeply unhappy and drowning in self pity. She doesn't realise that a lot of her shortcomings are because she will not take responsibility for her own life. She feels that she is too ugly, not loveable, a bad person, and not worthy of success therefore she unconsciously sabotages her own life. Then Effie meets Theo who shows her new possibilities and new experiences. Just as Effie starts to slowly emerge from her unhappiness, she is plunged into despair once more. Is Effie strong enough to survive this latest blow and begin to take responsibility for her own life or will she sink? This is Hannah Sunderland's first novel and what a great novel it is. Hopefully this is just the beginning of more fantastic novels. Definitely an author to watch!
