Very Nearly Normal tells the story of Effie, an angry, postgrad who has been unlucky in life, moved back in with her parents and feels nothing will break her way. She struggles to make friends and passes time working in a bookshop and feeling bitter that her manuscript has been rejected by several publishers. Her relationship with her mother is strained and she finds herself drinking more than she should. When she meets Theo, he sees something in her and tries to make his way into her life. Despite his easy going attitude and enthusiasm for life, Effie keeps pushing him away and it seems it will take an awful lot for him to break through and be trusted by her.

This is a nicely written story, fairly predictable overall but enjoyable to read nonetheless. It’s a decent length without being too drawn out and has a good mix of emotions without being overly sentimental or excessively sad. I can imagine this will be a very popular read and should do very well for Hannah
