This book was not what I expected and I enjoyed it all the more for it. It is not the fluffy rom com that the cover and blurb suggest but it actually darker and far deeper. Amongst other topics it covers the concept of functioning alcoholics (though perhaps not as well functioning as they would like to think), the damage social media can do to self-esteem, as well as the tragedy of addiction. I read this in one sitting as I wanted to see how the story developed.
At the beginning Effie does not come across as a character She is not your typical romantic heroine as she is caustic and angry, but this is what makes her stand out as a character. She is memorable with a clear, fully formed personality. The biggest love story of the novel turned out to be that of Effie learning to love herself and I became more invested in that than her relationship with Theo. I found myself willing for her to find happiness, regardless of whether Theo returned or not.
