At the beginning of the story, Aslak, climbs onto the roof of a building in Central Helsinki and starts shooting at people.
I eagerly anticipated an interesting story similar to We Need to Talk About Kevin but I was rather disappointed.
The parents of Aslak and his sister, Aava, are politically active, professional environmentalists. The family is completely dysfunctional : Aava is a doctor working in war torn Somalia whilst Aslak has developed schizophrenia and his only contact with other humans is on-line. Neither have any proper relationship with their parents or each other..
My disappointment in reading this book may have been due to the plodding, monotonous and, at times, repetitive and nonsensical narrative. There are few adjectives or adverbs and reading the book was rather dreary and boring. I don't think was entirely due to it being a translation from Finnish into English. Depressing.
