I wasn't sure what I would make of this story. Never really been in to historical novels but this was fantastic.
This story follows 3 women during Nazi Germany. Starting in the 1930s as the war is going on and women are having to survive with young children and the loss of their husbands. Marianne made a promise to a life long friend that she would look after the widows and children after then men had gone so she sets out to find the widows of her husbands friends. She manages to find 2 of them and the 3 of them work together to survive.
As the years go on the women separatroopers. Whether it be from a falling out or a new marriage it their lives are still followed.
As there the story unfolds you start asking questions about theit pasts and why they make certain decisions. The questions are always answered even if it is several chapters down the line.
It finishes in 1991 showing where they are years later. What has become of their children and the places they once called home.
The research and dedication book in to this book was most definitely worth it!
