I picked this book up in Poundland so wasn’t sure what to expect. It was certainly not this and I was pleasantly surprised and then saddened when I’d got to the end.
It took Jessica Shattuck seven years to write this novel and you can really tell how much love and care and attention to details she has put into it. It all revolves around 3 women who were married to Nazi resistors during World War 2. She makes an interesting delve into how people were taken in by Hitler and how hard it was to get out of the Nazi web once you were caught up in it. There are quite harrowing moments and in areas it can be quite graphic which may be distressing for some readers. Some parts I also felt to be quite plodding and hard to get through but I felt I had to go on with the journey and reach the end of all three women’s journeys. I think this is one that will continue to dwell on my mind for a long time - it’s got that ability to haunt its readers.
