This book is not what I expected at all.
It took Jessica Shattuck seven years to write this novel. The story about 3 women who were married to Nazi resistors during World War II was inspired by reminisces of her grandparents and other acquaintances who lived in Germany during the war. She explores the reasons why so many 'ordinary' Germans were attracted to Hitler's rhetoric and were swept along by his ideas until it was impossible to opt out.
At times the story was a bit slow but I felt compelled to read on as if it was a true biography (which it's not) and I needed to find out how it ended.
The story is somewhat unusual in that the main parts are set at the end of the war in 1945 and after the war in 1950.
I shall continue to think about this book and the secrets that were buried during the war and which will never be uncovered now that their owners have died, for a long time to come.
