A missing child is never good, but when you’re a celebrity it’s extremely bad for your image.
And image is what so much of this novel is about- illusions, lies, cover ups- it is difficult to decide what is the truth. It is very much a novel of our age.
There is a lot of scene setting & I found myself skipping pages at the start to try & find out what was happening. The story weaves backwards & forwards in time, introducing questionable characters and reasons why Ava could have disappeared, that make you, as a reader, feel concerned, and I suspected everybody!
There are numerous twists and red herrings, it appears no-one is as they first seem. How many secrets are there?
It certainly is a page turner, but I did not warm to any of the characters which in some ways is part of the success of the novel- the cult of celebrity is exposed as being without substance, it is all just a façade.
